Immigration in the movies

Hot Air does a review of "Border War" -- a new documentary. This is the first time I hear about it, so I'll have to do some research before I give my opinion on it.

You can check out the documentary's web site here. Human Events had this to say:

Citizen United President David Bossie said the concept behind “Border War: The Battle Over Illegal Immigration” first came to him last September as the group considered its next major project. It just so happened that in the course of the past year, illegal immigration has skyrocketed to one of the top political issues in Washington and across the country, especially among conservatives.

“I’m hoping our film really will create a discussion of the issues and give people a viewpoint of what really is going on at the border and how illegal immigration impacts the American people—from Teri March, the widow of the L.A. County sheriff’s deputy, to Congressman J.D. Hayworth, who is frustrated trying to put immigration reform on the agenda in Washington,” Bossie said.

Considering this is a key issue, this should be a movie worth watching--regardless of where you stand on the issue.

Crying wolf on the issue of evil

Excelent article, Michael! As someone who has been writing about immigration, this article has fine-tuned my thinking.

Now, before I start getting the comments, lets just focus on one thing--we are talking about what is evil, and what is not evil. This is not about immigration. It is not about those who defend immigration. It is about the value we place on the word "evil"

Of course, some illegals do deserve classification as “evil” – especially those involved in rape, murder, assault, gang warfare and other criminal violence. Like all other rational participants in the immigration debate (very much including the Bush administration), I energetically support the immediate arrest and deportation of more than 400,000 illegal immigrants convicted of various crimes. But once you look beyond the need to cast out the thugs, gang-bangers and welfare chiselers, you’re still dealing with millions upon millions of hard-working families whose major crime involved crossing the border illegally in the first place. Even if you believe that such people must leave the United States, with no chance to make up for their unauthorized entry with fines, back taxes and probation periods, does it really make sense to identify the undocumented but industrious gardeners and baby sitters and roofers and farm workers as “evil”?

Applying this powerful word in this context not only distorts the immigration debate, but cheapens the strongest condemnation we can apply to human behavior. If sneaking across the border to feed your family counts as evil, what do you call the carefully planned mass murder of 3,000 American civilians? Terrorists are evil, child molesters are evil, Communist dictators are evil, serial rapists are evil, slave traders are evil, but illegal immigrants – while hardly innocent – rarely qualify for this most monstrous designation. Terrorist violence and illegal entry into the country may both be wrong, both count as serious violations of the law of the land, but it’s warped and misguided to identify them as equally evil. A conservative who refuses to recognize the profound difference between mass murder and an individual’s violation of immigration laws displays a moral idiocy, an ethical illiteracy every bit as alarming as that of the liberal who refuses to acknowledge that evil exists at all.

Ted Stevens is the holder

MK has an update on the secret hold:

Ted Stevens is the holder, So said Tom Coburn, that is, in mid-August.

Which means, of course, I win!

Our readers had already figured that out, it seems. This is our home page poll results as of 10:59 AM.

Who do you think is the secret holder
of the Coburn/Obama bill?

Ted Stevens (R-AK) (154)

Mike Crapo (R-ID) (18)

Judd Gregg (R-NH) (30)

Terrorism in the homeland -- link roundup

Update: Mary Katharine has some comments on the story.

***

Hugh talk on his show last night about the SF car-terrorist and blogged about it:

Hugh updated with the SF Chronicle article:

The SUV hit two people in front of the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco on California Street, just blocks from where the rampage ended.

Blood covered the sidewalk in front of the center's gift store entrance and 50 feet farther down the sidewalk lay a mangled bicycle. Security cameras in front of the center captured images of the incident, which happened at 1:12 p.m., said to Aaron Rosenthal, spokesman for the community center.

"As far as we can tell, they were simply pedestrians on the street at the time," he said. (Hugh's emphasis)

If this had been a Gay Community Center, for example, do you think the media would be reacting the same?

Hugh reacts to the article:

...it is simply incredible that the spokesman for the JCC is so quick to dismiss the very idea that anti-Semitic rage drove the attack.

Hugh, it should be incredible , but to most Americans, I think, it has ceased to amaze how the media distorts the truth, and paints the news in any way they want. My family, when on the rare occasions that they watch the news, will call me to verify if certain things are true, and ask me where they can read the "true side of the story" before making up their minds. Fact is, most Americans don't trusts the mainstream media anymore. Just look at their P&L.

Mary Katharine wrote this in her column on Monday
.

Does the mainstream press ever wonder why conservatives distrust them so much?

If so, they need look no further than the “fauxtography” scandals of the last couple of weeks. Conservative bloggers have been hard at work sniffing out suspected fakery and staging in the photos sent back on the newswires from the Israel/Hezbollah conflict, and the investigation got pretty smelly.

I saw Drudge link to an AP story about 10:30 last night, but I don't know what happened to that one. This morning, he is linking to an AP story filed at 7:10 this morning.

Drudge doesn't have it highlighted or bolded--I guess its old news to him. You know, a muslim targets jews, no big deal. Right!

Wizbang has the picture from KNBC-TV, and links to various articles. Pajamas Media links to Gateway Pundit’s, who is providing a large map of the attackers route here.

Numerous eyewitness reports. “Sitting there like he just had a sandwich.” One witness reports the suspect said he was a terrorist, but police deny that,

Cozy Corner gives us some perspective:

You know how this would be reported if SF were in Iraq? "

Sectarian Violence Rocks San Francisco"
"More Muslim-Jew clashes reported near San Francisco"
"Police find body, 13 casualties in San Francisco"

They would also be playing the video and showing the pictures of the victims...photoshopping them in if necessary!

Michelle Malkin has a full round up of articles, and has been tracking the story closely. Check her post out here.   One of her readers provided this info:

Reader Chris writes: "The 3500 California St hit was a 1/2 mile from the main Jewish temple, Temple Emanu-El and 41 miles from his starting point in Fremont."

The Anchoress had the same thought i had above--what if it had been a gay community?

This is becoming an appalling habit in the press and by politicians. An Islamic fundamentalist shoots Jews in a Synagogue, and it’s some sort of random incident. An Islamic fundamentalist uses his car to kill people in front of a Synagogue, and in what would appear to be a somewhat “Jewish neighborhood” and the press takes a while to cover the story (probably looking for the appropriate “frame,”) until someone in authority can be found to sing out, “ROAD RAGE”! Yeah, that’s the ticket! Road rage! Mayor Newsom sees no problem, here…a “relatively young” person, obviously confused! Yes, that’s the ticket!

Omeed Aziz Popal, the poor confused youngster, is 29 years old.

Can you imagine, if someone had (God forbid!) driven a car into 14 gay people, how quickly the press would have managed to cover the story? Can you imagine that Mayor Newsom would call it “road rage” and suggest that there really probably wasn’t a “hate crime” attached to the action?

Most Frequently Asked Quesetions for Townhall.com Podcasting

The Townhall Talk Radio podcast is really getting popular! So, I thought I would share some tips and answers to the most frequently asked questions about podcasting. If you haven't signed up for podcasting yet, take this as an opportunity to do so.

QUESTIONS: (find corresponding answer below)

  1. How do I set up podcasts?
  2. I am able to see the file I would like to listen to in ITunes, but it is grey and there is no length listed.
  3. How can I see the dates for different shows, or what’s coming up on a particular show?
  4. It is only downloading the 10 most-recent files from each show. Can I go farther back than that?
  5. Am I able to update (add/delete shows) after I have created my podcast?
  6. When I click “Listen Now” it says that my preference is “Windows Media - High”, is there a way to change this?
  7. Can I just download the file in MP3 format myself? I don’t have ITunes, and I would like to play them with another player.
  8. Is there a way to fast-forward, pause, or rewind the “Listen Now” window?
  9. Ok. All that is good, but I can't figure out iTunes. How do I set up my podcast in iTunes?
  10. All that is good, but I'm having trouble logging in in the first place. My account doesn't seem to work, and I can't get to my personalized podcast feed.
Here are the answers:
  1. How do I set up my podcasts?

The easiest way to set up podcasts is with ITunes. You can learn more about listening to podcasts in iTunes at http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/itunes/it5-1.html If you are using another program, please see the second section. In iTunes, simply click the “Music Store” link and type in the name of the host you’d like to hear. You should then see their podcast appear and choose “Subscribe.”

Your first step is to make sure you have created a Townhall.com account and that you are logged-in. You will know you are logged in to Townhall.com when you see your local radio station call letters displayed on the top right box of any page.

    1. To set up your podcasting feed for iTunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes) or Juice (http://juicereceiver.sourceforge.net), click on the “Talk Radio Online” link under the Townhall.com header bar. It will be the second link from the left on the navigation bar.

    2. Click on “Set Up Podcasts.” It will be the first link from the left under the red navigation sub-bar, right under the grey navigation bar.
      http://www.townhall.com/TalkRadio/SetUpPodcast.aspx

    3. You will see 11 show podcast choices. At the bottom of the screen, all podcast shows are listed with a check box next to each. Click the “Get It” check box next to the shows you would like to listen to.

    4. When you have selected the shows you’d like, click the “Update you Podcast” button at the bottom of the page.

    5. The page will reload, and you will see a web address appear below the “Set up Podcast” header at the top of the page. This is your podcast feed link--you will need it to download your podcasts into iTunes or your favorite aggregator.

    6. Open your podcasting program (Such as ITunes or Juice), copy the podcast feed address, and paste into the podcast subscription window. Alternatively, on some computers, you can just drag this web address over the main iTunes or Juice window.

    7. You will see the name of the Townhall.com podcast, with a list of downloadable files. In some cases, you may have to click on the arrow/triangle to the left of the show title for the files to appear.

  2. I am able to see the file I would like to listen to in ITunes, but it is grey and there is no length listed.

This indicates either a file that has not been downloaded. If you have tried to click the “Get” button on a file you would like and it does not download, please let us know.

  3.  How can I see the dates for different shows, or what’s coming up on a particular show?

Each host’s Townhall.com page will have a section for “Audio Clips” which will include the full synopsis and length, and will also let you search the archive for shows that are more than 30 days old. In addition you will see topics that will be discussed that day, and directions on how to call the show.  http://www.townhall.com/talkradio/

  4. ITunes is only downloading the 10 most-recent files from each show. Can I go farther back than that?

Unfortunately, you are not able to podcast farther back than the latest 10 episodes you have downloaded. If you would like to hear an older show, you can go to the Host’s page on Townhall.com click on “Show Clips, which will allow you to “Listen Now” to many past shows.

  5. Am I able to update (add/delete shows) after I have created my podcast?

Yes. All you have to do is login to your account, and click “Manage Your Podcasts” under the “Your Info” link (http://www.townhall.com/talkradio/SetUpPodcast.aspx). Select or unselect the shows you would like, then click “Update my Podcast” and the page will reload. Return to your podcast managing program and click update, and it will automatically add shows without you needing to re-past the podcast feed URL/Address.

  6. When I click “Listen Now” it says that my preference is “Windows Media - High”, is there a way to change this?

As of now, this is the default player for the “Listen Now” window. Additionally, the Listen Now and the player currently only work in the IE browser. We are working on upgrading the player to a browser-neutral Flash based player very soon.

  7. Can I just download the file in MP3 format myself? I don’t have ITunes.

Yes, you can download the MP3 files, but only through a podcast aggregator--not each individual audio file directly. If you don’t have iTunes, there are many other Podcasting aggregator programs out there such as Juice (http://juicereceiver.sourceforge.net/) that will allow you to download the audio files to your computer. This will allow you to listen to the files on your computer, as well as copy them into your favorite MP3 player other than iPod.

If you are looking to put files onto another audioplayer such as a Creative, Samsung or IRiver, after you have downloaded the podcasting software you can explore the program files of the software (Usually held in the “my Music” folder) and locate the MP3 files directly, then copy/paste or drag them to your player folder using your Windows explorer.

  8. Is there a way to fast-forward, pause, or rewind the “Listen Now” window

As of now, there is no way to do this with “Listen Now.” We are currently working on adding this feature.

  9. Ok. All that is good, but I can't figure out iTunes. How do I set up my podcast in iTunes?

    1. Make sure you have the latest iTunes installed. You want to open iTunes 4.9 and select Music Store in the Source list.

    2. Copy your podcast feed URL from the set up podcast page. (you have to be logged in) http://www.townhall.com/talkradio/SetUpPodcast.aspx

    3. Open iTunes, and find the "Subscribe to Podcast" menu item, under the "Advanced" main menu popdown menu.

    4. Paste the Townhall.com Talk Radio podcast feed URL into the iTunes URL window, and click "ok."

    5. A list of podcast episodes will appear.

    6. Double-click any episode to listen to the entire podcast if you wish.

    7. Click Podcast in the Source list to see the Settings button on the bottom. You can use the Settings button to indicate how often you want to check for new episodes, and set which podcasts will be copied to your iPod.

    8. You may view and download past podcast episodes. To do this, select Podcasts within the Source list and click the arrow to the left of the podcast name. iTunes will reveal all downloaded and available episodes. To download a particular past episode, click the Get button.

  10. All that is good, but I'm having trouble logging in in the first place. My account doesn't seem to work, and I can't get to my personalized podcast feed.

If you created your account prior to July 5th, 2006, you will need to create a new account. When we re-launched the Townhall.com web site, we did not bring over the old accounts, in order to give everyone the chance to opt-in to the new site. If this is the case, we apologize for the double work and thank you for your continued readership.

If you recently created your Townhall.com account, but are still having trouble logging in, here are some more tips to help you figure out what the problem might be.

    What is my Login name?

Your login name is the email that you provided when signing up for Townhall.com, and the one that the password was sent to. If you never got a password over email, this means you might have put in a typo when you entered your email. You will need to create a new correct account.

Where do I find my password?

A computer generated password will be emailed to you after you complete the signup. After you retrieve it from your inbox and use it to sign in, you should go to “Your Info” and click on “Change My Password” and change it to whatever you’d like.

If you used a fake or had a typo when you created your account, then this feature will not work. If this is the case, you will need to create a new account.

I try to create a new account, but the form is rejecting my email:
If this is the case, it means that there is an account with that email already. Contact me and let me know what the email is, and I can look into what else might be the problem

Well, there you have it! If you have tried setting up your podcast before, but had trouble, give it another try. Feel free to leave your comments, questions or feedback below--we're always open to hear suggestions and ways to imrpove what we are doing.

My Name in Japanese: Just for fun

I found this website that has a cool little tool that lets you find the Japanese characters for the  phonetic sounds in your name. So, I looked up Ho Sue E (Josue, as its pronounced in Spanish) and this is what it gave me:

Pretty cool, right? I only know one person who's of Japanese heritage, but I hope to travel to Japan some day. Anyway, this is the site you want to go to if you want to check out your name.

As far as what I get out of this, I know my wife and my family treasures me, I only hope that GOD is revered when people see my actions and hear my words, and I am certainly the chief recipient of God's grace, who's given me so much more beyond what I deserve.

Only in America: The border patrol inquisition

I'm not sure there is anything I can say. Saunders has a great column--check it out. Here's the the quick and short version of it.

In February 2005, the agents tried to stop a van driven by drug smuggler Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila near the Mexico border. After a scuffle with Compean, Aldrete-Davila fled on foot. Ramos says he believes that he saw a gun -- which the smuggler denies. Both agents fired at Aldrete-Davila, who fell, then continued his escape across the border. After he got away, Ramos and Compean filed a report on the 743 pounds of marijuana they found in the van, but not on the gunfire. As it turns out, Ramos had shot Aldrete-Davila in the butt. A Homeland Security agent heard about the episode, went to Mexico and offered Aldrete-Davila immunity, if he testified against Ramos and Compean.

U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton, a Bush appointee, prosecuted the agents. In March, a jury found them guilty of assault with a dangerous weapon, discharge of a firearm during a violent crime, obstructing justice, lying about the incident and willfully violating Aldrete-Davila's Fourth Amendment right to be free from illegal seizure.

Because there was gunfire, the mandatory-minimum prison sentence the agents will serve is 10 years. The U.S. Probation Office in El Paso, Texas, has recommended 20 years -- 20 years away from their wives and their children, and among the type of people they've put behind bars.

As for Aldrete-Davila, he faces no charges for the 743 pounds of pot. That leaves him free to carry out his plan to sue the Border Patrol -- that is, U.S. taxpayers -- for $5 million because his civil rights were violated. What a country.

This is the worst part of it all:

Compean's attorney, Maria Ramirez, told me that her client, a first-generation American, served honorably in the U.S. Navy, then worked for the Border Patrol. He had a home, now sold, a wife and two children. Another child is on the way. But in the 15 minutes after the agents saw that van, after one split-second judgment call, his life melted away: "In 15 minutes it's gone, just gone."

KTEN out of Texas has the AP story about a legal defense fund that is being set up for the two agents. A cover up sounds like grounds for a firing or other disciplinary action, but not this extensive jail time.

Getting the word out about Aphasia

Garthway has his column out today and is joining forces to get a message to Oprah.

Aphasia doesn’t get the press that Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s or AIDS get, but it is just as devastating to the families it affects. And it’s actually more common than Parkinson’s.

That’s why the families affected are trying to build more awareness of the tragedy of aphasia. The National Aphasia Association started an ambitious campaign called Operation Oprah. They are hoping that with enough messages, Oprah Winfrey will do a show about the issue. Say what you will about Oprah and daytime television, but she has the ability to make a silent issue into the cause of the day. And besides, a show about aphasia is one less show about Tom Cruise.

You can read more about the National Aphasia Association at http://www.aphasia.org. I'm going to stop now for a minute, and go tell my wife how much she means to me and how much I love her!

Good question!

Sandra Wise at A Word to the Wise asks,  "Why don't Democrats get indicted?" Makes you wonder about:

A: The failure of the media to shed light on corruption event at a hald-attempt to being fair minded.

B: The failure of citizens to be more critical and discerning of who they vote for...or maybe its just the media's fault for hidding their "darling's" flaws.

Updated: Bloggers 2,996 Tribute project

Katie Favazza brought to my attention this 9/11 bloggers memorial project I decided to join. I'm hoping to get more attention on this, so I wanted to make sure everyone who is part of the townhall.com blogging community can hear about it.

To pay tribute to the 2,996 victims of the tragic attack, DCROE 2996 is organizing what will probably be the first major coalition among bloggers to date--and arguably the most important. He is inviting all bloggers to sign up on his site, and then he is assigning everyone a particular victim to commemorate on their blog. [That's the direct link to sign up, but be sure to browse the site in general, too.]

So, I went ahead and signed up! I was assigned to memorialize Anthony Segarra, age 52, who was killed at the World Trade Center. The site tells me he is a resident of New York, N.Y. I'm the 2322th blogger to sign up for the 2,996 Tribute project.

So, what are you waiting for!! Sign up and join the rest of us! Make sure to link back to this post, and to Katie's blog, so you can get a trackback (another great way to bring in new readers).  If you email me, or leave a comment on this post, and make sure to include the URL to your blog post--I'll link back to you right here.

Update: Mary Katharine Ham just joined the project, and so has Michelle Malkin.

Update 2: Don't forget to let me know if you join the project.

Amato: Why We're Going To Camp Pendleton

Radio host Rick Amato from KCBQ in San Diego, and who blogs here at Townhall.com, is blogging about a planned radio show from Camp Penleton. Here is what he had to say about that whole story, and the reason he's going to Pendleton.

Contributing to the presumption of guilt, is the fact that conservative lawmakers have been painfully silent on the issue. A scenario to die for, for any overly ambitious prosecutor worth his or her salt.

I will be extending guest invitations to all the local republican congressmen, Oceanside city council members and a few national names who I will reveal later in the week….and ‘yes’  even  John Murtha himself!  Of course family members and defense attorneys of the imprisoned marines will also be invited to join us on the show.

Make sure to tune in on 1170 KCBQ in San Diego.

Plans are in motion to broadcast my upcoming Saturday show (8-26-06) LIVE from the main gate entrance at Camp Pendleton. I say “in motion” because everything is pending our ability to get a wireless connection between CP and the KCBQ studios. The engineers will be testing everything tomorrow and we should have an answer by noon PST. We are all optimistic.
