Townhall.com Community Reacts to VA-Tech Shooting

It's a sad day in the news today, and the entire Townhall.com blogging community is in shock at the terrible news from Blacksburg. (Updates at the end of the post)
Today your author sat in shock as the media updated the customer with the violent shootings that took place at Virginia Tech. The final count is 33 dead, including the shooter and many more injured. Your author extends a sincere prayer for those who lost their lives and the grieving families.
Fox news has reported that in honor of the lives lost at Virginia Tech, President Bush has instructed the American People that flags are to be flown at half-mast until Sunday evening.

American Yank writes about what many conservatives know is coming -- more calls for tougher gun control.

The American Left will use these events, as bad as they are, to cite the need for tougher gun laws. While your author agrees that background checks and responsible gun ownership is a must; how would tougher laws better serve society? What the media machine won’t say in blunt terms is that the shootings at Virginia Tech, the massacre at Columbine or any other spree killing are perpetrated by mentally and emotionally deranged individuals. If they could not have obtained a gun another means of destruction would have been used. However it is the arrogance of the Left that always believes they can dictate social behavior to a finite formula through taxpayer funded legislation and full compliance will create a nirvana. They are delusional.

Catmman at Rounds Out highlights a story of heroism that is coming out of the tragedy, In the Face of Tragedy, Hope – Three Stories and highlights similar stories that came out of Columbine and the flight 93 tradgedy.

Three incidents (including yesterday’s shooting) offer evidence that not all Americans are willing to go quietly into that good night without trying to save others, assert their faith, or fight back in the face of overwhelming odds.

Even in this tradgedy, we can see a glimmer of hope.

Douglas Gibbs at A Right Angle in a Left Turn World attacks the left for their typical approach to gun violence, and points to the error in that thinking.

Fact is, by placing gun-control laws upon us that essentially takes weapons away from law-abiding citizens unconstitutionally, you place the citizen, and this nation, at a disadvantage. The criminal and violent element in this nation will always find a way to get its hands on guns. Fact is, robbers don't enter homes if they know the owner is armed, and shooters don't shoot at somebody with a gun pointed at them. And if they do, they deserve to go down.

Maudie reports on the British newspaper, Daily Mail, and their coverage of the tragedy and, what else, gun control.

A British newspaper, the Daily Mail, carried the headline, "What price the right to bear arms?"  As they say, "Right back at ya.

Florida's Rep. Ros-Lehtinen released a statement through her Townhall.com blog.

"Ros-Lehtinen Expresses Sadness and Shock Over Virginia Tech Tragedy"

Adam from The Idaho Conservative has released the latest episode of his podcast, included here.

Katie has a valuable link round up of important news sources, and had these comments.

I was happy to hear that the presidential candidates have cancelled most of their plans for today out of respect for the tragedy. Likewise, it just wouldn't be right to make a round-up of political links this morning, so I've put together a few important blog posts, a column, and a video all about Virginia Tech instead.

From Bert, at Conservative Librarian:

I share the horror others feel at yesterday's Virginia Tech tragedy and my prayers are with the victims, their families, and friends.  Additional details about this tragedy will undoubtedly be revealed in the days and weeks to come.  It's clear the university's administration did an abominable job in informing students of the first incident.  Relying on email to communicate to the student body and community is absolutely pathetic!  Were university administrators stupid enough to think that all members of their community are looking at their email 24/7?  A campus wide system of loud speakers would have been a much more intelligent and effective warning mechanism.  Va. Tech's president has now revealed that it was a student who was the perpetrator.  It's to early to say what are the best procedures to implement to prevent the occurrence of other tragedies on campuses.

Scott Ott at ScrappleFace: News Fairly Unbalanced uses satire to express his views on yesterday's events. The headline gives you a clue: Pelosi, Reid Call for Arming All College Students?

Over at hopefully onesimus, Trespassers William has this quote to share with his readers:

...."weep with those who weep,..."

He provides some insight into our human nature and our desire to know more about what is going on at Virginia Tech.

I just finished reading another article and cried.  i read and listen not because i have some morose fascination with death or some masochistic /sadistic tendency that enjoys other peoples tragedies.   i read and listened because i am human and i want to know what has happened to my fellow man (especially in the case of a tragedy such as this).

Thaale of Anticontrarian reacts to the use of the "lockdown" word yesterday.

It’s a meaningless buzzword. Obviously if the cops or campus security had a magic Lockdown button that would actually achieve anything, they would have pushed it. But even if you could effectively “lock down” every building, how do you know who you’re locking in and who you’re locking out?

I thought this was a good end to this link round up. Heath at O Theophilus reminds everyone that the fact is guns are not the problem,

I submit that the problem is not with guns and their control.  The problem, according to our Creator is in the desperately wicked human heart.  Jesus Christ said "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders . . ." (Matthew 15:19)  How could this tragedy been prevented?  I do not know

We are a fallen race, desperately in need of redemption.

1:12 PM -- More heartfelt thoughts from ARandomGuy at Young Conservative.

...this should be a time to remember those who have fallen. 32 innocent people lost their lives yesterday, and there will be plenty of time to argue and debate about the relevant issues in the future. For now, let us simply try to remember those who have fallen, pray for their families, and wish them the best through this difficult time.

Reuters got its Condi Rice story wrong!

So what else is new -- Reuters got its story on Dr. Condoleezza Rice all wrong. The Drudge Report top story Reuters headline reads,  "Condoleezza Rice: I'm glad Imus was fired."  Now, I happen to have just listened to the entire segment, and read the transcript -- she said no such thing.

You can get the real story right here on Townhall.com. Listen to the Medved Interview of Dr. Rice right here, and read the full transcripts right here.

Battle of the Online Encyclopedias
by: Wendy Cook, April 13, 2007
Launched back in November 2006, Conservapedia is one of the most recent online encyclopedias trying to make its mark as an accurate reference source. In just the few months it has been established the site already has over 5 million page views. But what really makes this site so unique is their claim to be “without the liberal and anti-Christian bias of other online sources like Wikipedia.” http://www.campusreportonline.net/main/articles.php?id=1611

And, on-the-scene reports from the Pennsylvania meeting of multicultural educators:

WSJ: Political Candidates, Fund Raising, Blogs & The Web

Update: The Washington Post has an article on Widgets I missed. Thanks to Rob for pointing out. Rob points out one good example.
While this may technically not qualify as a widget, I did want to call attention to a great new tool courtesy of Justin Hart at My Man Mitt. It allows Romney fans in New Hampshire to follow on an interactive Google map “where they’ve been, endorsements, fundraisers, headquarters and more.” Very cool.

Internet Strategist Patrick Ruffini posted last night about a new widget service he discovered.
I recently discovered a great service called SpringWidgets, which is used to embed RSS feeds on blogs and MySpace pages. Using the service, I built a widget with all the latest headlines from the 2008 Wire you can embed on your blog.
***
Attention is growing on the powerful role the web is playing in American politics. While blogs have risen as huge players in the media world, it is expected that the 2008 election will be a wake up call to the power of the blogosphere and the web. Lee Gomez writes about this in the Wall Street Journal highlighting the fund raising power of the web.
The biggest role for the Web has involved raising money. Barack Obama got 27% of his $25 million in contributions from online donors. Sen. Clinton, the only other candidate to announce the percent raised online, got about 23%. But all the candidates have learned that putting a "Give money" button on the home page of their Web sites usually is both cheaper and more effective than mass mailings or 800 numbers, the two standards for populist fund raising in the days before the Web.
Big Web operations such as Yahoo and Google have learned that the interest in a presidential election, just like the interest in "American Idol," can, with the right sort of marketing, be translated into more "page views" and thus more advertising. The sites have begun actively recruiting presidential candidates to avail themselves of politically oriented special features, such as a presidential election "channel" on Google's YouTube.
The effort isn't just in the U.S. In France, Yahoo's French home page links to "Presidentielle 2007" about that country's current election campaign.

What I would like to see is more non-profits taking these lessons from the campaigns, and using the web to make it easier for supporters and constituents to easily donate to their favorite cause. Among the select charities I trust and support, I have donated more frequently to the one charity that provides a PayPal donate button--Lotus Buds. Why? Because they have a PayPal button on the home page. Every time I get a e-newsletter, I click through and send a donation.

But allow me to demonstrate the other viral power of the internet, and the power of "the Army of Davids" -- to be evangelists for your cause! Combine that with the low-cost fundraising power, and you have an effective tool for advocacy.
Lotus Bud International's vision is to see more Chinese families embrace adoption by educating families in China about the possibilities of adoption, preparing successful adoptive families through parent training, and providing funds for adoption and the education and medical needs of adopted children.

Lotus Buds International is working in China to promote and support adoption among Chinese families to make a difference in lives of children in need of a family.

There are millions of beautiful little girls who want a family. Join Lotus Buds in promoting and supporting adoption among Chinese families to make a difference in lives of children in need of a family.

Here is another favorite of mine:

Opportunities to Serve in 2007: Whether you’ve already taken the plunge and decided to join in a life-changing experience overseas, or you’re still wondering what Short Term Missions are all about, we can give you the information you'll need along the way. Read more

My point: The Internet offers a tool for committed constituents to join in a charity's efforts, spreading the message, and even supporting fund raising efforts through the use of widgets, syndication feeds, and other viral web-tools. I saw a perfect example in Rudy Giuliani's campaign website. Here are a couple embed tools that allows bloggers to fund raise and spread the "Rudy" message on their own blogs. Note: The following does not constitute an endorsement of a candidate.

Non-profits need to start going beyond the brochure website and really harness the power of the internet. There is a lot of good to be done, and a lot of people who would love to join in. Just make it easy for them and empower those who want to support you the most. The investment is well worth the rewards in lives changed.

Tolkien's Middle-Earth Goes Online

J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth is going the way of Online Virtual Social Networks!
In the upcoming online subscription game based on the Lord of the Rings books, players who are rusty on Tolkien lore will be able to brain up on "Middle-earth" by using an in-game Wikipedia and find their way around using Google's handy map service. Turbine, the company that created the game, has created tools so that your hobbit (or elf or dwarf or whatever) can easily keep a blog.
Sounds like a fun game. I just don't have the time to try it out. If you do, write up a review and let me know about it. I'll link to it from the Blogatorium page.

Successful Missile Defense Intercept Test Takes Place Off Hawaii

Just got a press release from the Missile Defense Agency reporting on another successful missile defense intercept. Considering the news from Iran, and the continued inaction by the UN against Korea and Iran, its good to hear that we have these guys moving forward on this and showing some success.

I'm going to try to get some video up shortly if I can. (Update: Video is right here.)

Successful Missile Defense Intercept Test Takes Place Off Hawaii
Lieutenant General Henry “Trey” Obering, Missile Defense Agency director, announced today the completion of a successful intercept test for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) ballistic missile defense element at the Pacific Missile Range Facility off the island of Kauai in Hawaii. This test involved the successful intercept of a “mid endo-atmospheric” (inside earth’s atmosphere) unitary (non-separating) target representing a “SCUD”-type ballistic missile launched from a mobile platform positioned off Kauai in the Pacific Ocean. The interceptor was launched from the THAAD launch complex at the Pacific Missile Range Facility. This was the 26th successful “hit to kill” intercept for elements of the Ballistic Missile Defense System since 2001, and the third successful THAAD intercept in the current program phase.

The target missile was launched at approximately 8:42 p.m. Hawaii Time, April 5 (2:42 a.m. EDT April 6).
Approximately three minutes later the THAAD interceptor missile was launched and approximately two minutes later the intercept occurred over the Pacific Ocean.

Soldiers of the U.S. Army’s 6th Air Defense Artillery Brigade stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas operated all
THAAD equipment during the test, conducting operations of the launcher, fire control and communications and radar. Their interaction with the complete THAAD system provided valuable test and operations experience for the soldiers and enhanced the operational realism of the test.

This was the first THAAD interceptor mission that was considered a Ballistic Missile Defense System
(BMDS) test, meaning that more than one element of the BMDS participated in the test. One of the objectives of this test was demonstrating successful beyond-line-of-sight communications with a radar aboard a U.S. Navy Aegis ship, as well as communications links with the Command, Control, Battle Management and Communications (C2BMC) system and the U.S. Air Force Space-Based Infrared Sensors (SBIRS) system.

Other flight test objectives included demonstrating successful missile launch from the PMRF launch site; interceptor “kill vehicle” seeker characterization (target identification), object discrimination and intercept of a non-separating liquid-fueled target; and collection of data including target aimpoint (location where interceptor strikes the target), ground equipment and radar tracking/target discrimination and hit assessment algorithms, and evaluation of the missile launching procedures and equipment. While post-test analysis will take place over several weeks, initial indications are that the test objectives were achieved.

The first successful THAAD intercept test in the current program took place on July 12, 2006 at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, and the second successful THAAD intercept took place on January 27, 2007 at PMRF. A test on September 13, 2006 at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico was not completed due to a failure of the target missile after it was launched. The THAAD interceptor was not launched.

THAAD is the first weapon system with both endo-atmospheric (inside the atmosphere) and exo-atmospheric (outside the atmosphere) capability developed specifically to defend against short, medium and intermediate range ballistic missiles. The THAAD system will provide high-altitude missile defense over a larger area than the complementary Patriot system, and, like the Patriot, intercepts a ballistic missile target in the “terminal” phase of flight—the final minute or so when the hostile missile falls toward the earth at the end of its flight. THAAD uses “hit to kill” technology, using only the force of a direct impact with the target to destroy it.

The Ballistic Missile Defense System is being developed, tested and deployed as a layered defense for the U.S. homeland, its deployed forces, friends and allies against ballistic missiles of all ranges in all phases of flight. The higher-altitude and theater-wide protection offered by THAAD provides more protection of larger areas than lower-tier systems like Patriot alone. THAAD can be transported by air to wherever it is needed worldwide, and consists of radar, fire control unit, missile launchers, and interceptor missiles.

The THAAD program is managed by the Missile Defense Agency in Washington, D.C., a joint service
Defense Agency within the Department of Defense, and is executed by the THAAD Project Office in Huntsville, Ala. Lockheed Martin Corporation is the prime contractor.

Blogging 101: The Art of Making Your Blog Buzz

Blogging Expertise has some good advice.

I have visited plenty of other blog websites and seen a lot of things I like… but also a lot of potential that’s not being used. Many people have the right idea when it comes to blogging, but a lot of bloggers (particularly beginners) are missing key ingredients that make blogs that really buzz!

I’m sure you can relate to this, and have visited blog sites that are as dead as a doornail. You’ve also probably visited blogs that haven’t seen any updates for months or years. Clearly they’re still getting traffic (you’re there, right?), but they’re not using it in any kind of useful way.

So, how do you generate buzz on your blog website once you attract the traffic? It all comes down to a few simple points: presentation, writing style and topic choices.

Read what these are.

Business and Blogging

Beast-Blog.com:
If you were to ask your typical business owner if they plan to add a web log or “blog” to their web site the last answer you’d probably get is an emphatic “yes.” Instead you might get a quizzical look, a frown and a scoff, or even an emphatic “no” instead. That’s a shame because a blog has the power to increase the main site’s traffic, page rank, and general appeal — it can even stand alone and be the site. Blogging is a powerful communication medium if the right software is used, it’s properly designed and maintained, and it’s put to use.
Read the whole post and take a closer look. To ignore this tool would be a foolish business decision. To ignore this tool if you are in politics or advocacy would be just plain nuts.

More Good News: Jobless rate falls to five-year low

This sort of thing never gets enough attention, so here it is! I would encourage any bloggers reading this to cover it. If you are a math wiz, play with the numbers, create a chart to go with it, and share it with your readers!
The unemployment rate fell to a five-year low of 4.4 percent as job growth picked up to 180,000 last month — a show of strength that bolstered hopes that the economy will endure the turmoil in the housing and mortgage markets without major harm.

The March increase in jobs reported by the Labor Department reflected a revival of hiring among construction companies, department stores and retailers as well as continued robust growth of health care jobs.
Its interesting that its not just high end tech jobs--It's construction and retail jobs.

A comment by a professor caught my attention and illustrates the Liberal's ignorance of basic economic principles.
Peter Morici, business professor at the University of Maryland, said the job boomlet has been better for college-educated and skilled people than for high school graduates and dropouts, though all groups have seen their unemployment rates drop in the past year.

"For high school graduates without specialized skills or training, jobs offering good pay and benefits remain tough to find," he said.
Stop raising the minimum wage, and this won't be a problem. Teenagers who do a great job will get paid more than the minimum wage anyway. Kids who don't care otherwise, and just need some gas money will get minimum wage and be happy with it. That, and businesses can go about doing what they do.

Make sure to read the whole thing.

AP: Missile-Defense System Test Succeeds

I have a keen interest in this area of defense. In today's world, we are behind schedule on getting a proper missle defense system up. So, I always celebrate these positive reports.
The military shot down a Scud-type missile in this year's second successful test of a new technology meant to knock down ballistic missiles in their final minute of flight, the Missile Defense Agency said Friday.

A ship off Kauai fired a target missile before 9 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time Thursday. Three minutes later, soldiers with the U.S. Army's 6th Air Defense Artillery Brigade launched an interceptor missile from Kauai that destroyed the target over the Pacific, according to the agency.
